Closing The Million-Word Gap
Our Mission:
Our mission is to close the million-word gap for students in Title I schools by providing read-aloud books that build language skills and encourage family engagement.
Why Our Mission Matters:
The first years of a child's life are the most important for language development. Long before children learn to read independently, they learn through listening. Every conversation, every story, and every question builds vocabulary and background knowledge that later supports reading comprehension and academic success.
Research in early literacy and the Science of Reading has shown that children who are exposed to book language develop broader vocabularies and better comprehension. These skills form the foundation upon which reading proficiency is built.
Yet many families in Title I communities may lack the resources to purchase read-at-home books for their children which can reduce the amount of rich language children hear during these critical early years. Our program addresses this challenge by providing a circulating library between school and home that can be used year after year. We place high-quality books into the hands of children every school day, making it easy for families to share a read-aloud experience at home empowering them to become active partners in their child's literacy journey.
We believe that meaningful change doesn't require complicated solutions. It begins with one book, one caring adult, and one conversation repeated day after day. By creating consistent opportunities for shared reading, we help build the language foundation children need to become confident readers, successful learners, and lifelong thinkers.
